Keeping Your Home Safe & Sound: Tips for National Safety Month

Keeping Your Home Safe & Sound: Tips for National Safety Month

June is National Safety Month, and whether you’re a homeowner or renter, there’s no better time to give your living space a quick safety check. At McCann Real Estate, we know that a safe home is a happy home—and whether you found your place through us or are still searching for the perfect spot, we want to help you feel secure. After all, your home should be your sanctuary, not a source of stress.

A Few Small Steps for a Safer Home

Safety doesn’t have to mean complicated systems or big expenses. Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference—the kind of quick fixes you can do in an afternoon while listening to your favorite podcast.

Doors & Windows

That front door you walk through every day? A sturdy deadbolt or even just reinforcing the strike plate can make it much harder for unwanted visitors to get in. If you’re in an apartment, don’t be shy about asking your landlord to upgrade flimsy locks—it’s their job to keep the property secure.

Smoke & CO Detectors

Those little beeping devices on your ceiling? They’re actual lifesavers. Test them monthly (yes, really—it takes 10 seconds) and swap out batteries when you change your clocks for daylight saving. Bonus tip: Use a vacuum attachment to clear out dust so they work properly.

Fire Safety

Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen (and learn how to use it—there’s probably a YouTube tutorial). And if you love candles, just remember—never leave them burning unattended. We’ve all forgotten once… let’s not make it happen twice.

Trip-Proofing

Throw rugs might look cozy, but they’re also sneaky tripping hazards. A little double-sided tape or a non-slip pad can keep them—and you—in place. While you’re at it, check for loose floorboards or uneven steps.

Kid & Pet Proofing

If you’ve got little ones (of the human or furry variety), securing heavy furniture to walls and tucking away loose cords can prevent accidents before they happen. Those IKEA dressers might look innocent, but they’re surprisingly top-heavy!

Outside Matters Too

Whether you’ve got a backyard, a balcony, or just a front stoop, keeping the outside of your home safe is just as important as the inside.

Lighting

A well-lit walkway isn’t just welcoming—it helps prevent falls and deters unwanted visitors. Motion-sensor lights are great if you don’t want to leave them on all night.

Grill Safety

If you’re firing up the BBQ, keep it a safe distance from the house (and maybe have a spray bottle handy for flare-ups). And please—no grilling on the apartment balcony, no matter how tempting it is.

Landscaping

Trim back bushes near windows so they can’t be used as hiding spots. If you’re a renter, your landlord should handle this, but it doesn’t hurt to give them a friendly reminder.

Be Ready for the Unexpected

We don’t like thinking about emergencies, but being prepared can make all the difference when seconds count:

  • Keep a basic first-aid kit somewhere easy to grab (not buried in a closet behind the holiday decorations). Bandages, antiseptic wipes, and some pain relievers can handle most minor mishaps.

  • Save important numbers in your phone—local police, poison control, and a trusted neighbor. Better yet, write them down in case your phone dies or you lose it.

  • Stash some bottled water and snacks in case of power outages. Extra snacks are never a bad idea anyway—just rotate them out so they don’t expire.

Your Safety Matters to Us

At McCann Real Estate, we don’t just help you find a house or apartment—we want you to feel at home in it. That means helping you ask the right questions when touring places (“How old are the smoke detectors?”) and pointing out potential safety concerns before you sign a lease or close on a house.

Whether you’re settling into a place you found with us or still searching for your perfect match, we’re here to help make sure it’s not just the right fit, but a safe one too. Because at the end of the day, the best home is one where you can relax without worrying about what might go wrong.

Here’s to a safe and happy June (and beyond).
