Welcome to South Philadelphia

South Philadelphia is a gorgeous and diverse community with many prideful and dedicated residents that frequently boast about all of the amazing features of the area. Residents of South Philadelphia have a longstanding tradition of celebrating their community spirit through extravagant events and festivals.

In the late 20th century, South Philadelphia experienced a new wave of immigrants that came from Asia. Significant numbers of Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Thais came to South Philadelphia to settle. They saw good opportunities in local real estate. For them, the housing stock in South Philly comprised luxury homes even if they were more modest row houses.

These Asian newcomers were accompanied by immigrants from Russia, Mexico, and many other countries to continue the neighborhood’s tradition of being a vibrant mix of ethnic groups. South Philadelphia is a good spot to seek out bargains in real estate and to set a marker for the sort of luxury homes for sale that people long for in the South Philly area.

Locals Passionate about South Philadelphia

Residents of South Philadelphia tend to be big boosters of their neighborhood and delight in telling visitors about the charms this bustling locale has to offer. It is a great location for real estate even if luxury homes do not comprise the bulk of the housing. South St. marks the northern limit to the district. The Delaware River borders it on the east and the south while the Schuylkill River defines its western edge.

This zone started out as a satellite region of Philadelphia encompassing the townships of Southwark and Moyamensing. The area experienced rapid growth in the 19th Century as the Industrial Revolution spawned large scale factory production. Waves of immigrants particularly from Ireland poured into the district to fill these jobs.

The Act of Consolidation passed by the Pennsylvania Legislature in 1854 made this section of real estate part of the city of Philadelphia. The population continued to expand due to Philadelphia’s growing industrial base. Immigrants from Italy, Poland, and many other countries joined the Irish in the various factories. Towards the end of the 19th Century and into the 20th Century, substantial numbers of African Americans moved up from the South to take jobs in the regions, and they often settled in South Philadelphia.
