The “Main Line” is a catch-all term for the western suburbs of Philadelphia that run along Lancaster Avenue and the former main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad (and its branch line to Manayunk). It extends from the city limits to, traditionally, Bryn Mawr and Paoli.
Neighborhoods along the Main Line include 19th and early 20th-century railroad suburbs and post-war subdivisions, in addition to a few surviving buildings from before the era of suburban development. Today, the area is primarily regarded for its several educational institutions and suburban life.
The original Main Line towns are considered to follow the acronym “Old Maids Never Wed And Have Babies.” From Philadelphia, they are:
● Overbook
● Merion
● Narberth
● Wynnewood
● Ardmore
● Haverford
● Bryn Mawr
These towns are characterized as one of the primary bastions of “old money” found in Southeastern Pennsylvania. These areas are denser than other suburbs and feature lively, walkable downtowns. These communities were established along Lancaster Avenue before the railroad’s construction. Additionally, the towns of Wayne, Paoli, and Malvern are often grouped with the core Main Line. Today, the Main Line includes a few of the wealthiest communities in the nation, including Gladwyne, Villanova, and Radnor.
Whether you are looking to relocate from Center City to somewhere with a bit more leg-room or you’re coming in from out of state, communities along the Main Line make ideal places for both families and professionals. While the Main Line is considered something of a suburban reprieve from the hustle-and-bustle environment of the City of Brotherly Love’s downtown and surrounding hotspots, there are still plenty of notable historical sites, venues, and other attractions located throughout the area. Below is a brief list of some of our favorites:
● The Barnes Arboretum
● Bryn Mawr Film Institute
● King of Prussia Mall
● Clover Market
● The Cynwyd Heritage Trail
● Valley Forge Historical Park
● Longwood Gardens
● And much more!
The Main Line is a beautiful, sprawling stretch of Pennsylvania with historical and cultural significance that makes it an ideal place to either visit or reside.
