In Philadelphia, and everywhere else, August 4th is known as U.S. Coast Guard Day. This day honors the military branch that protects our waters and shorelines. Largely an internal celebration for all Coast Guard personnel and their families, we’d like to honor the brave members of this important branch of the military.
By law, the Coast Guard has 11 missions:
- Ports, waterways, and coastal security
- Drug interdiction
- Aids to navigation
- Search and rescue
- Living marine resources
- Marine safety
- Defense readiness
- Migrant interdiction
- Marine environmental protection
- Ice operations
- Other law enforcement
The Coast Guard presence and impact is local, regional, national, and international. Their job is a unique combination of maritime safety, security, and environmental stewardship.
We salute Coast Guard personnel today and every day.
The next time you are on a Jersey Shore beach and that huge orange helicopter flies by, give them a big wave!
