Family oriented, old world charm, and striking have become synonymous with Philadelphia’s Queen Village. Lying along the eastern edge of the city, just south of Center City, south to Society Hill, and east of Bella Vista, this well renowned residential neighborhood serves as an iconic part of the city.
Looking Back
The history of Queen Village is best conveyed through its many names. According to the Queen Village Neighbors Association, the first settlers were Swedish and arrived in the 1600s. Back then, the area was known as the “Wiccaco”, or “pleasant place”. After the founding of the city in 1682, William Penn changed the name to Southwark. But by 1970, the name was changed again, to its current name in recognition to Queen Christina, the Sweden’s queen at the early times.
Fun fact: During the construction of I-95, the population dropped greatly because of the destruction of homes along the construction. But, in the 1960s, neighborhoods slowly began to rise again.

The Schools
Most of elementary students attend the Meredith Elementary School, located at 5th and Fitzwater Streets, serving grades K through 8. For high school education, teens normally attend the Furness Horace High School. However, students can attend a school outside the neighborhood through what’s called, the “Voluntary Transfer Program of Philadelphia.”
Way of Transportation
Queen Villages comes with many SEPTA bus routes, with busses 57 and 25 going to the north and south, and 40 and 64 going to the east and west.
The parking in the area comes in both metered and non-metered street parking, and also offers paid lots. As for biking, there are only few streets where bike lanes are provided, them being Columbus Boulevard and Washington Avenue. However, most of the streets can easily be navigated by bike.
