In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He also established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in the month. Just one reason why he is my favorite President!
Although Philadelphia is known for its amazing water ice, nothing is quite as yummy as a delicious ice cream cone on a hot humid summer night! On this day in the middle of National Ice Cream Month, we hope you enjoy an ice cream cone, a sundae, or a milk shake. Set the diet aside and splurge a little!
Although there is not concrete history or inventor of ice cream, there are many myths about its origin. Supposedly Marco Polo experienced ice creams during a trip to China, and introduced them to Italy on his return. Another myth has the Italian chefs of Catherine de’Medici taking this cool dish to France when she went there to marry the Duc d’Orleans in 1833. Another myth says Charles I rewarded his own ice-cream maker with a lifetime pension as long as he kept his recipe secret, keeping ice cream as a royal prerogative.
We do know that Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouriis credited with inventing the ice cream cone. At World’s Fair in St. Louis in 1904, he filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream to make the first ice cream cone.
